About
Papers in Computer Science is a blog for abstracts and brief summaries and discussions about published computer science articles, updated 3 times a week. I’ll cover a variety of areas, focus on some of the most interesting and important papers in each one, and I’ll try to explain them to a general computer science audience without specialist background. Because most of these are available online, many of them without cost, readers can consult the original paper for more information if they’re interested.
My primary motivation in writing this is to learn more about the topics I write about and get used to reading papers regularly, in preparation for starting my Ph.D. program at University of California, Berkeley this fall. I welcome your comments or corrections on any of my posts and hope the information dissemination will help research to reach a larger audience and encourage collaboration between fields.

Thank you for your positive feedback! To be honest I wouldn’t say I have a specialization – I have very diverse interests and I could see doing my PhD in pretty much any area. The areas that I currently have the most background in are algorithms and data structures, complexity theory, systems, programming languages, and compilers. I’m guessing you’re an algorithms person. :-)

Hi, Derrick!
I love your articles, and I hope you can keep it up. I’m currently working on something similar for my own blog and I can appreciate that its a lot of work. In a typical grad class you might have to write about three papers a week but the summaries don’t have to be so easy to understand.
Also I’d like to tell any readers that don’t know about Google Scholar, which I unfortunately didn’t discover until my SECOND grad course. It will change your life if you aren’t already using it to search journals.

By the way, I would really appreciate an explanation of the Paxos algorithm especially with examples that cannot work without it.

Its really nice to see your enthusiasm for research works. What about making a PaperWkiki, where people will be able to share their views about a paper s/he has just read? Anyways, you deserve thanks for your effort. A lot of people will be helpful with this site.

i am an engineering student pursuing cs as my major..i want to present some papers to increase my interests towards research..your site is very good for me because i don’t know how to prepare abstracts and i got something in the positive side…keep up ur good work..if u can help me please do…Thanks…
